How to Keep Your Hats Clean!

Here at SDHC we take pride in a great hat, and better yet, a clean hat! Whether it’s your favorite sun hat, fedora or fabric hat, learn to care for it, just as it does for you all day in the hot summer sun.

Let’s start with the basics - cleaning the sweatband of your hat! As most of our hats sweatbands are fabric, keeping them clean is easy, simply combine a mild laundry detergent with warm water and apply using a brush. Use a cloth with warm water to remove the mixture and allow the band to air dry. Keep your hat's shape by using a fabric steamer, and put the brim between two pieces of wax paper to iron it if seen fit. Always keep your hat in a cool and dry space, stored in the proper sized box.

Fabric and Straw Hats are what put SDHC on the map in our hometown of Carlsbad, California. Locals and visitors alike enjoy our extremely popular line large brimmed fabric hats, which make them the most needed to be cleaned for! To keep the body of the hat clean, simply use a soft bristle brush or lint roller to remove dust and dirt (and probably some sand if we’re being honest!) Instead of jumping straight to a harsh liquid fabric cleaner for oil-based stains, sprinkle the stained area with cornstarch or talcum powder. Allow the powder to sit for a minimum of five hours, or until the oil is absorbed, and brush it away with a soft brush.

Keeping your hats clean year round can be a breeze with these easy tips and tricks! Whether you’ve decided to have a full blown cleaning day, or you’ve noticed it’s time to clean your favorite form of sun protection SDHC has you covered!
